Item What is conscience and why is respect for it so important?(The final version is available from www.springerlink.com., 2008) Sulmasy, Daniel P.The literature on conscience in medicine has paid little attention to what is meant by the word 'conscience.' This article distinguishes between retrospective and prospective conscience, distinguishes synderesis from conscience, and argues against intuitionist views of conscience. Conscience is defined as having two interrelated parts: (1) a commitment to morality itself; to acting and choosing morally according to the best of one's ability, and (2) the activity of judging that an act one has done or about which one is deliberating would violate that commitment. Tolerance is defined as mutual respect for conscience. A set of boundary conditions for justifiable respect for conscientious objection in medicine is proposed.Item Altered standards of care for health care providers in the pandemic influenza(Indiana University, 2009) Kinney, Eleanor D.; McCabe, Heather A.; Gilbert, Amy Lewis; Shisler, Janna JoPandemic influenza will pose tremendous challenges to health care providers, state public health authorities, and the public. All will have to conduct business under the most adverse of circumstances. It will be difficult for providers to meet the customary legal standards of care imposed by state and federal regulatory authorities, as well as the common law tort system. This white paper will explore the legal issues associated with altered standards of care in pandemic influenza.Item Data for a civil society: how we can harmonise privacy and use population data for public good(2007-06-15) Stanley, Fiona1. These same health officials must also address the many ethical implications that arise from making these decisions. In the Spring of 2008 the Survey Research Center at IUPUI (SRC) conducted a series of three surveys designed to better understand public and professional attitudes regarding preparedness for an influenza pandemic. The survey project was part of a larger initiative funded by the Indiana State Department of Health with funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This initiative was coordinated by the Indiana University Center for Bioethics under contract with the Indiana State Department of Health as a part of the project “Translating Ethics Advice into Practice: Public and Professional Outreach about Pandemic Influenza Planning in Indiana.”Item Introduction to Indiana's pandemic influenza preparedness plan(2008-08-27T18:03:15Z) Hill, Mary L.Item Incorporating ethics into planning: Indiana's approach(2008-08-27T18:15:39Z) Meslin, Eric M.Item Ethical issues in pandemic influenza planning: four hot topics(2008-08-27T17:55:04Z) Gaffney, Margaret M.Item Public attitudes regarding pandemic influenza: a survey of adults in Indiana(2008-08-27T18:19:52Z) Wolf, James G.Item The ethics of pandemic influenza planning in Indiana: legal perspectives(2008-08-27T18:08:18Z) Kinney, Eleanor D.
